Multi Camera Formats

Live sports

Wimbledon Andy Murray vs Federer

This is a clip of the Wimbledon tennis match, we see Murray and Federer play tennis. Throughout the game we see various camera shots, for example we see many long shots, mid shot, close ups and establishing shots throughout the match.

Practical reasons

One practical reason for multi camera is to show the coverage of the action at 14:40, we see Murray serve and then it goes out if the camera moved we would have missed the specific shot. Also I noticed that when they start to play, the camera is in the same place as a long shot. This shows the whole match and you can see the action as well, if the camera did move while they were playing it may not catch all the action as it not planned out. Another practical reason for multi camera is because the setting is very big and there is a large crowed which means that they need a lot of camera's to catch the audience responses for example at 15min of the video we see the camera zoom to the crowed to show their response and the reaction.

Aesthetic reason

One aesthetic reason is for the visual style and mode of address by this i mean it visually looks better and engaging. An example of this is at 13.29min we see a whole shot of them playing tennis, where we can see all the action and visually looks more pleasing for the audience to watch as they can see everything that is happening live in the arena. Another aesthetic reason is to maintain viewers interest for example at 15.10 min we see Andy Murray celebrity this maintains the viewers interest as they love to see competition between the players.

A difficulty with using multi camera is that you won't be able to show the other camera shots during the match as you may miss the action this is why you have to show it when the ball goes out for example the camera does not move from 13.08min till 13.16sec as this is when they are playing but after that it shows the highlights of that shot, this is why the camera is always still when they are actually playing.

Concerts

Adele- Some One Like You (Royal Albert Hall)

In this clip we see Adele singing her song and giving a speech at the Royal Albert Hall,  we see many shots in this clip as it was a big concert because Adele is famous for being a British singer and song writer, she has won a lot of awards for her music.During the concert we see a lot different camera shots being used, as the Royal Albert Hall is very big. This is why they have used long shot, mid shot, close up

Practical reason

One practical reason would that they use multi-camera to catch the action because the Royal Albert Hall is very big which means that they will need have camera's at different position as they would want to catch the audience response as well for example at 2.30min we see the audience and the artist in the shot by doing this they can show the people at home the audiences response to her music. Another practical reason would be that the they want get all the action by this i mean that they may be a spontaneous action in the studio by having different camera's around they can show the crazy reaction from the audience in the studio, for example at 3 min we see the camera pan at the back, by this i mean it moved side wards this shot showed the audience's reaction.

Aesthetic reason

One aesthetic reason for having multi-camera would be that visually it looks better as they can show a range of different shots. It gives it a mode of address as it makes it more exciting, for example when she's bout to start singing at 3.30 we see the lighting of the studio dual down and then a spot light focus on the artist,  when this happens the camera changes, this is to visually get the audience excited. Another aesthetic reason would be that the maintain the viewers interest by using different shots as it can get very boring when someone giving a speech, however at 0.31 when Adele is speaking the change the camera to the audience to show their reaction and it also shows the audience at home to feel excited.

A drawback for this genre using multi-camera is that they have a lot of camera's which means that they need to manage more camera's which means that they need to have more employee's to manage the camera's. Also having multi-camera means that there are more camera's you need to set up, this means that you it will be  more time consuming as you have to set a lot of the camera's.

Public events

Opening Ceremony - Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games

In this clip we see the opening ceremony of the Olympics , the Olympics is a public sport event which takes place every 4 years in different countries, i have chosen the 2008 Beljing Olympics as i believe that there is a lot of action which means that there is more camera language .

Practical reason

One practical reason for multi camera is coverage of action, by this i mean the have multi camera because during the opening ceremony there is a lot of action, this would be hard to catch all the action in a single camera. For example at 5 seconds of the clip we see they are outside of the arena then the camera changes and goes inside the arena, with a single camera they would have not been able to do that. Another reason is because of the size of the studio/ arena, the arena is very big which means that they may have spread the shows around the arena which means they will need to have set up camera's at each location, also when they introduce countries at 6 min they have set a specific camera there to show their entrance, if they had the single camera it would have been very hard as it takes time to move around.

Aesthetic reason

One aesthetic reason visually looks better and it also creates a mode of address, by this i mean it creates excitement for example at the start of the clip the camera is outside this gets the audience excited, also when the fireworks starts at 1 min we see the camera inside the arena then the camera goes outside this gives a better image of the fireworks, it also makes it look a lot more pleasant to watch. Another aesthetic reason for multi camera is because it keeps the audience more interested for example in this clip at 2.13min we see children walk with the flag but we see the camera move to the front and then shows the facial expression of the audience.

Quiz shows

Tipping point- quickest 10,000 pound won

This is quiz show where you need to answer questions so you can win money. The show is called Tipping point which is shown on ITV. The show uses a lot of camera shot as there is a lot of action in the studio.

Practical reason

One practical reason for multi camera on this show is because they want to cover the whole action of the game show. Tipping Point has a lot of camera's as they want to show the whole game and if they did have one camera they would not be able to go into details with shots for example at 4.43min  we see the counter go in, if this was a long shot you would not be able to see it for a long shot, this is why multi camera is needed in a game show. Also another reason may be that the game show is not planned which means anything can happen, this is why they need to have more camera's around for example 5.57 we see the big star go in and then she celebrates by having multi camera they were able to show how it went in and then the celebration.

Aesthetic reason

One aesthetic reason may be that visually it looks better by this i mean it looks more entertaining as there are different shots, for example at 2.05 we see the camera change as the counter goes down. This could have looked very boring but they made it look very exciting changing the shot from long shot to close up. Another aesthetic reason for multi camera is that it is used to build suspense for the audience for example 5.57 we a shot which is a extreme close this shot is in the actual machine this means that we the gold counter about to drop this is what it builds excitement.

Chat Shows

The Graham Norton show- Matthew Perry takes the friend apartment quiz

The above chat show is cal the Graham Norton show which is a aired on the BBC, this show is set in a studio, we see the host interview the special guest on the show.

Practical reason

One practical reason for chat show using multi camera is so that they can record simultaneous recording coverage, for example in the above clip at 3.30 we see the host ask the audience if they know what a word meant this is when the changed as it was unexpected then we see the camera shows the audience as it shows their response, with a single camera they would have not been able to show the audience. Another practical reason was because the studio size, as you can tell the studio is very big as there are over 100 audience sitting in the background, with a single camera they would not be able to show the audience and host as it will take a long time to change the camera and you can see the ask the audience question at 4 min then they zoom in to the audience faces who answer the question.

Aesthetic reason

One aesthetic reason for a chat show using multi camera is because it is to maintain the viewers interest as they can get bored with the same shot. A chat show could have been recorded with a single camera, however it may get the audience bored as it looks like an interview. For example at 0.52 sec we see the host then we see long shot of the guest then it zooms into the guest when he reply, there is a lot of shots while the host speaks, this keeps the majority of the viewers interest at home.
Magazine Show

Top gear- S4 EP3

The Top gear is a magazine which deals with lot of different reports about cars. The show also have a segment of time where they interview guests on their show in the studio where there is a large audience.

Practical reason

One practical reason for magazine show using multi camera is because of the constraint of the studio, by this i mean the size of the studio there is a lot audience there and also they manage to fit a car in the this is why they need multi camera as they need to move around the studio, for example at 13min of that clip we the host with the car in the studio with the crowd around them, then we see the camera change to a long shot at 17.47 showing the guest coming on to the studio.

Aesthetic reason

One aesthetic reason for magazine show using multi camera is so it visually looks better, for example at 13.03 min we see the camera move from a long shot to a close up to the hosts face then when the other host speaks it has a close up of the other host, this keeps looks better as it shows the host facial expression and if the sound isn't clear they could see what they were saying. Another aesthetic reason is that it wants to keep it entertaining as the audience can get bored this is why at 13.50 they change to various shot this maintains the interest as the audience do not get bored because the shots change even though the hosts are still in the same place.

Talent show
Kevin Simm performs ‘All You Good Friends’: The Live Final - The Voice UK 2016

The above clip is from the voice which is aired on the BBC, this specific clip is from the live finial where the contestant performed live on air. In this clip we see various camera angles as they are using multi camera.

Practical reason

One practical reason would be because of the size of the studio, as the studio is very big because they have over 500 audience there and also it won't be possible to use a single camera and show the audience as well, for example at 1.31 min the show the artist singing then they show a close up of the audience showing the response, if they had a single camera it would not be possible. Another reason is for coverage of action because as it is live many things can happen also at the end, all of the contestant of the show came running this is when the camera changed to a long shot at 2.25 min.

Aesthetic reason

One aesthetic reason for talent show using multi camera is because it visually looks better and creates a mode of address, by this i mean how it tells the audience how to feel. For example at 1.54 we see the camera focus on the audience which have been amazed by the singing this tells the audience at home to be amazed and also by having different shots it visually keeps the audience interest as they can be more entertained for example at the beginning of the clip we see artist singing but the camera changes from a close up to a long shot then a mid shot this visually makes it more interesting for the audience to watch.
